Vigilant neighbours praised as works van stolen in creeper raid returned to owner

Car thief burglary

Vigilant residents in a south Armagh village ensured a works van – stolen in a creeper style burglary – was returned to its rightful owner.

The vehicle was taken from a house near Camlough but the culprits were seen in action.

Quick-thinking locals played their part after witnessing suspicious behaviour.

Their prompts action, which led to the works van later being returned, has brought praise from local Sinn Fein representatives – and a renewed call for people to be on their guard.

“The recovery of this valuable work vehicle is to be welcomed and those local residents who noticed suspicious activity and helped ensure the vehicle was recovered intact deserve the highest praise,” said Councillor Aoife Finnegan. “Hopefully those involved in these criminal acts on families, businesses and the community will be apprehended.”

Her colleague, meanwhile, urged people to be vigilant and ensure their belongings are safely secure.

“It is noticeable that there appears to be an increase in criminal activity,” said Councillor Declan Murphy.

“Homeowners should ensure that their belongings are safe and secure.

“Residents should also report anything suspicious such as strange vehicles or people in the area and look out for each other. Good neighbours are invaluable and are key to putting a stop to these criminal gangs.”
