Council to pull plug on practice of lighting up civic buildings for causes and charities

Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council are to pull the plug on lighting up its civic buildings for causes and charities as of next month.

Over a number of years council has supported a large number of charities, causes and activities with lighting buildings such as the Palace Demesne in Armagh, Craigavon Civic Centre and Banbridge Town Hall in order to assist organisations in raising awareness and highlighting key messages.

Requests to light up buildings have substantially increased with over 90 light ups taking place in the past year alone.

As a result, Council feel this significant rise has resulted in public apathy, leading to a reduction in engagement across council channels.

In a letter to elected representatives, the Council’s Head of Estates and Asset Management, said: “Following a review of lighting up council buildings and after careful consideration, council has taken a decision, [that] this initiative will no longer operate from April 1, 2024.

“However, we will continue to support local charities through various events, activities and civic functions organised by council.

“We are proud to have been able to play our part in highlighting hundreds of charities and causes through this initiative and would like to offer our sincere best wishes to you and your organisation in the future.”
