Vandals took two attempts and bigger vehicle to smash up election poster

An large election poster belonging to SDLP candidate Justin McNulty was smashed up and removed after vandals failed with their first attempt in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 8x4ft poster positioned on the Portadown Road in Armagh was ripped from the post, but after a number of men had failed to put it in their car, they returned a short time later in a jeep.

Mr McNulty condemned those responsible but believes those responsible will be held accountable.

Mr McNulty explained: “On Friday my team began putting up some of my election posters, and one of the large 8 x 4s was removed in the early hours of Saturday morning.

“At around 1.30am a couple of guys arrived in a car, tried to smash up the poster and get it into their car, they couldn’t.  A short time later they returned with a jeep and took the poster away.

“I have been contacted by quite a number of people condemning the removal of the poster and have been passed both the car registration number and that of the jeep.

“I intend to pass these to the police as it is an illegal offence to remove or disrupt an election poster.”

He added: “It has also worth noting that they removed my poster, but didn’t touch the posters belonging to Unionist parties.  We are lucky in this country to have a democracy. Many other countries don’t.

“This will not deter me nor my team. My message is simple, if you don’t agree with me and my message of holding the executive to account, or demanding better services for everyone in this society then vote for someone else at the ballot box. That is your right and that is what democracy is about.”
