Remains of exploded pipe bomb found outside Armagh house

The remnants of an exploded pipe bomb have been discovered outside a house in Armagh.

Police were at the scene at Primates Manor on the Rock Road from 10am.

The security alert has since ended and the road has re-opened.

Chief Inspector Jon Burrows said: “Army Technical Officers inspected a suspicious object which has been declared as the remains of an exploded pipe bomb type device.

“No damage has been caused to property and there have been no reports of any injuries.

“Police are investigating this incident and reports of a loud bang in the area at around 1am this morning. The remnants of the device have been taken for further examination.”

If anyone has any information which could assist police with their enquiries I would ask them to contact police in Armagh on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Commenting MLA Cathal Boylan said: “The actions of those involved in leaving this device are to be condemned outright.

“Those involved have showed a blatant disregard for the local community and put the lives of local people at risk. This is a residential area and in this day and age people should feel safe in their own home. For someone to violate that by putting a bomb or even a hoax device there is unacceptable.

Mirroring his sentiments, Sinn Féin councillor and Lord Mayor for ABC council Garath Keating added: “Those behind it may portray the myth that they are acting on behalf of this community. They couldn’t be more wrong.

“There is no community support whatsoever for this type of action and those responsible are serving no purpose or cause. There is no logic to this act and these actions are not welcome in Armagh.”
