Tandragee business given go-ahead for £4m factory extension plans

Mushroom Compost, Tandragee

A Tandragee business is planning a massive £4 million factory expansion in the County Armagh town.

Mushroom Compost Ltd will more than treble the size of its operations on the Cabragh Road.

It will be a move which will cost in excess of £4 million but represents a major show of faith in the town and its potential.

The business has been operating on the Cabragh Road for the past 15 years.

Plans to extend operations were first submitted almost three years ago, in September 2013.

The development had previously been refused planning permission, and had been described by a planning official at the time as a “major expansion” of a rural enterprise.

The application had been deferred.

Additional information was later provided and an MLA meeting held after which it was deemed “acceptable” subject to TransportNI also giving its blessing.

Just last week the applicant was finally given the go-ahead by the planning department at Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.

Approval has been given for six additional compost bunkers, together with extensions to the existing factory, which includes 13 mushroom tunnels, a conveyor passage, cold store, filling, spawning and emptying hall.

New office accommodation has also been included.

The new development will see the business’s existing floor space of 1,930 sq metres increase to 6,223 sq metres.

It is also expected that two new jobs will be created upon completion.
