Ram-raiders use vehicle in attempt to rip cash machine from wall

Would-be thieves attempted to dislodge a cash machine from a wall  by ramming it with a vehicle.

Police are appealing for information following the attempted theft of an ATM at a railway station in the Woodhouse Street area of Portadown in the early hours of this morning.

Just after 3.50am, police received a report of a window being smashed in the premises.

It was then discovered that there were straps around the cash machine and a vehicle had been used to try and drag it away.

Inspector Philip Shepherd said: “I would appeal to anyone who would have been in this area and noticed any suspicious activity to contact Lurgan Police Station on the non emergency number 101.

“Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Local Upper Bann MLA Sydney Anderson has out rightly condemned those responsible.

Commenting Mr Anderson who has been in contact with the PSNI stated: “This attempted ATM theft at Portadown train station involved a vehicle smashing into a glass window at the train station at 3:15am on Tuesday morning. The criminals then attached straps around the ATM and to the car in an effort to drag the machine out of the building. Failing this the vandals then took to the ATM machine with a pry bar before speeding off from the scene.

He continued: I would urge anyone with information to contact the PSNI on the non-emergency 101 phone number. Those responsible for such activity need to be apprehended and rightly punished for their actions.”

Local Portadown Councillor Jonny Buckley commented saying: “I utterly condemn those involved in this attempted theft. They have ultimately caused a further inconvenience to those that use the local train station which has already seen continued disturbances on the line in recent days. I know that the Police have several leads of inquiry, which hopefully will lead to those responsible being brought before the courts for their actions.”
