Owen Creaney murder: Pair to be arraigned in November

Owen Creaney

A man and woman will go on trial charged with the murder of “vulnerable” County Armagh man whose body was discovered in a wheelie bin.

At a sitting of Craigavon Magistrates’ Court in Omagh, prosecution submitted there was a prima facie case to answer.

Before the court were 24-year-old Shauneen Boyle, of Edenderry Park in Banbridge, and Stephen Hughes (28), of Moyraverty Court in Craigavon.

They had been charged with the murder of Owen Creaney, of Victoria Place in Lurgan, during a hearing at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court in July of last year.

They were arrested a short time after Mr Creaney’s body was found in a wheelie bin, placed in a porch at the rear of the Craigavon home of one of the accused, Stephen Hughes.

At the time, the officer leading the murder investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Richard Campbell, from Serious Crime Branch, said police had been called to Moyraverty Court in Craigavon after a report of suspicious activity at the address.

“When officers arrived they found the body of  Owen Creaney. It had been placed in a wheelie bin in a porch at the rear of the house,” he said.

The victim had been described by the officer as “vulnerable”.

Mr Creaney had only celebrated his 40th birthday on June 28, the week before he died.

DCI Campbell described him as a “frail and vulnerable man”, adding: “Although he was only 40 he had significant mobility issues which meant he required the aid of a walking frame or stick to get about.”

Both of the accused have been remanded back into custody and will go on trial at the Crown Court.

They are due to be arraigned on November 6.
