Newry man appears in court charged with attempted murder

Prosecution stated that proceedings were at an 'early stage' and asked for the case to be adjourned until September

A Newry man has appeared before court on Wednesday accused of attempted murder.

The 22-year-old is alleged to have committed the offence on June 17, of this year, and was released on continuing bail with a condition not to enter the Derrybeg estate.

Patrick Gary Ward, of Springfarm Heights, appeared charged with the single count at Newry Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

As the charge was read, it was heard that the offence was alleged to have been committed on June 17, of this year.

Appearing via videolink from his solicitor’s office, Ward confirmed that he understood the charge and was connected to the same by a constable.

Prosecution stated that proceedings were at an “early stage” and asked for the case to be adjourned until September 22 for an update.

District Judge Eamon King released the defendant on continuing bail, with conditions that he have no contact with the alleged injured party, that he sign at a police station twice a week and he is not to enter the Derrybeg Estate other than Derrybeg Terrace and Main Avenue.
