A man is in critical condition in hospital after being discovered lying on a street in Newry during the early hours of this morning (Monday).
A police spokesperson said the man is fighting for his life.
“A male was located in New Street, Newry at 2.25am with serious head injuries and remains critically ill in hospital.
“We have arrested three people who remain in custody.
“If you saw anything suspicious in this area around this time please call us on 101 & quote ref 165 03/06/19.”
Independent Newry City Councillor Gavin Malone has condemned an assault.
Speaking from the scene Cllr Malone said: “I am utterly shocked and heart broken to learn the details of the assault that took place here this morning which has left a man fighting for his life in hospital.
“I would like to condemn those responsible and thanks to the swift actions of the PSNI three have been arrested and are currently in custody.
“This is yet another event in a recent spate of violence and disorder in the city and worries me deeply”
