Bakery fined for selling short weight bread after Trading Standards investigation

A Newry bakery has been fined £525 at Newry Magistrates’ Court today (Monday) for selling short weight bread.

In a case brought by the Trading Standards Service of the Department for the Economy, Sunray (Home Bakeries) Limited pleaded guilty to 21 charges under the Weights and Measures (Packaged Goods) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2011.

A consumer complaint was received by Consumerline alleging short weight Corn Bread packed by Sunray (Home Bakeries) Limited in August last year.

Dr MacMurdo, a Trading Standards officer, investigated the complaint.

He visited several large food retail outlets in the Newry area and discovered serious weight deficiencies in a wide range of different breads produced by Sunray (Home Bakeries) Limited.

When he visited the bakery premises Dr MacMurdo discovered that the company had failed to comply with their legal duty to carry out weight checks on the various breads and to keep records of such checks.

Such checks would have alerted the bakery to the fact short weight loaves were being produced and enabled them to take remedial action to prevent such loaves being offered for sale.

A spokesman for the Trading Standards Service said: “It is vital that consumers can rely on packers to ensure that packages they make up for sale are the correct weight.

“There are rules that the packer must legally abide by and it is an offence for them not to do so. In simple terms consumers should get what they pay for.

“If any consumers are concerned about the weights of any packages they purchase they should contact Consumerline on 0300 123 6262 or log on to http://www.consumerline.org”
