Man convicted of historical sex abuse against a 14-year-old child

A county Armagh man has been found guilty of historical sex abuse against a 14-year-old child in 1978.

Detectives from our PPU (public protection unit) have been investigating a case of historical abuse of a 14 year old child in 1978 in the Portadown area.

The trial of a man was due to start this morning, however he pleaded guilty at the last moment, therefore meaning the victim will not have to take the witness box.

He has been found guilty of 10 charges in total; five of gross indecency and five of indecent assault.

He will be sentenced at a later date.

A PSNI spokesperson, posting on social media, said: “Whilst a case like this happening in the first place can never be celebrated, a result we got in court this morning is one we’re delighted with.

“Historical abuse has made a lot of headlines recently and our message is clear- if you have been a victim of sexual abuse, no matter when it happened, talk to us.

“We have dedicated teams who are very good at what they do, and will take an incident from the initial report right through to a conviction.

“You should never have to suffer in silence, and you can get the justice you deserve.

“As this case shows, you MIGHT not even have to give evidence, but you will need to take that first step of speaking to us.

“They will treat any report with the care and sensitivity it deserves.”

Call into a station or phone 101. Break the silence.
