A pensioner had a miraculous escape after a van smashed through a wall and into her kitchen last night (Sunday).

A 27-year-old man was arrested at the scene after his van careered into the house in Waringstown.

At around 9.10pm it was reported that a Citreon Berlingo van had crashed through an external wall to the kitchen of a property on Clare Road.

Inspector Gregory Beckett said: “A female occupant, who is in her early 70s, required medical treatment for shock and some minor cuts to her head and arm.

The driver of the van made off from the scene but was located by officers a short time later.

He remains in custody this morning.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have seen the Citreon van in the area prior to the time of report is asked to contact police by calling 101, quoting reference 1284 28/01/18.”

DUP MLA Carla Lockhart said; “I know this lady well and to see the pictures of the incident bring home how shocking it was.

“It is fortunate this morning that we are not dealing with a fatality and although shaken up with some cuts the resident was not seriously injured.

I have no idea what crosses someone’s mind to then try and run away but this only compounded their lack of driving ability.

“I want to thank those who went to help and to the PSNI for their quick response on apprehending this individual so soon after.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the lady and know that with her family support she will get through this ordeal.”
