Co Armagh school smashes Guinness World Record in memory of 11-year-old Maddy-Leigh

1170 students form Human Pi to smash previous record of 847

Pupils at a Co Armagh school have smashed a Guinness World Record in memory of an 11-year-old class-mate who tragically passed away last month.

A Year 8 pupil at Lismore Comprehensive School, Maddy-Leigh Harbinson died at the Royal Victoria Hospital in February, her death sending shockwaves across the community and beyond.

At the Craigavon school today, (Thursday), the students took on a rather unusual World Record.

And they absolutely smashed it!

The mathematical constant Pi is given as 3.14.

And, to that end, what better date that to tackle a Pi-related record than what is recognised as Pi-Day – March 14, or 3/14!

The students decided to form the largest Human Pi symbol –  which is written as π.

The record stood at 847 people.

But the Co Armagh school clocked up 1170 students and staff in their fantastic effort.

The record attempt was held in partnership with Maddy Leigh’s family and to help raise awareness and money for Diabetes UK.

The school provided updates and live footage throughout the course of the day.

And, while still waiting official verification, there is no doubt about it – another record has fallen in Co Armagh for another great cause!

The school shared pictorial evidence of their achievements from the sky this evening and what a sight it is.

They dubbed it: ‘A Picture Worth More Than a Thousand Words’.

Indeed it is, indeed it is! Well done to you all!
