Cross-border project to remember three local lives lost at the Somme

A cash award of €6,500 has been offered to a cross-border project to remember three locals connected to the Battle of the Somme.

Two young residents of County Armagh and one from County Monaghan will form the basis of the ‘Illustrating the Somme’ project.

It is a joint initiative involving Monaghan County Council and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.

The Department of the Gaeltacht has offered the grant towards the costs of what will be an educational project aimed at those in the 12 to 25-year-0ld age bracket.

A recommendation to accept the letter of offer will go to the ABC council’s economic development and regeneration committee for consideration this Tuesday.

The project will recount the stories of the three young people and see the production of an illustrated publication.

There would also be talks, events and workshops centred around the subject matter, as well as an educational outreach programme.

It is expected that the materials produced will also form part of exhibition materials at local museums as part of the continuation of the centenary commemorations of the Battle of the Somme.
