Contractors sought for next stage in exciting £645,000 Kilcluney ‘hub’ development

The next phase of the exciting Kilcluney community ‘hub’ project should be getting underway in the summer, Armagh I can reveal.

Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council is currently advertising for contractors to apply for a select list for the Markethill-based development.

The project would cost in the region of £645,000.

The Kilcluney hub has been in the pipeline for the past numbers of years.

Last month the first major phase came to fruition with the opening by First Minister Arlene Foster and Social Development Minister Lord Maurice Morrow of a new £670,000 full size 3G pitch.

The overall plans also include a new community hall and changing facilities.

Contractors are being asked to express an interest and submit bids before Friday, April 1.

Following the successful appointment of a contractor, the work would begin some time after June and would be due for completion by the summer of 2017.

The new pitch opened last month was part financed by the Department for Social Development through the Regional Shared Sports Facility pilot programme, and involved the extension of an existing training pitch to provide a full size floodlit facility.

It will be used by local sports clubs and other organisations within the area.

Speaking at the opening, First Minister Foster said: “I am delighted that the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister has been able to provide over £700,000 funding through its Social Investment Fund which will further enhance facilities with the development of the proposed community hub.

“These new facilities will provide a safe and secure sports facility and will build on existing good relations through participation in sport.”

Local Orange lodge Kilcluney LOL 132 is behind the hub plans, which are receiving support from a number of sources, including through the Social Development Fund and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.
