Work is expected to get underway shortly on a £35 million extension at the Quays in Newry – which will create hundreds of new jobs.
Newry-based O’Hare and McGovern Limited has today (Monday) been awarded the main contract for the development.
This is the fifth phase of the development of the Quays, which is owned by Parker Green International.
It is an ambitious scheme, a huge investment in the area and one which is expected to create up to 200 jobs during the construction and bring 300 new jobs when up and running.
The development will see additional floorspace of almost 110,000 sq ft.
It will represent a stand-alone retail development and comprise six retail units together with three restaurants.
There will also be a multi-storey car park – with 600 spaces – with link and a bridge constructed to the existing Quays shopping and leisure cerntre.
New access for motorists would be provided to Drumalane Road.
Finals plans for the development were approved by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in January.
There is also a sixth phase planned for office accommodation at a cost in excess of £10 million.
This has been in the pipeline for some considerable time and will be known as Fisher House.
