Armagh Magistrates Court

A man accused of assaulting three police officers on a single date will face Crown Court proceedings next month, a court has heard.

The 22-year-old is alleged to have committed the offences on August 19, of this year.

Simon Hughes, with an address of Mill Mews in Ballymena, appeared charged with three counts of assault on police at Armagh Magistrates’, sitting at Newry, on Tuesday.

As the charges were read, it was heard that all of the alleged offences are said to have occurred on August 19, of this year.

Appearing via videolink from Maghaberry, the defendant made no objection to the holding of a preliminary enquiry.

Prosecution submitted that based on the papers before the court there was a prima facie case to answer.

Defence barrister Conn O’Neill made no contrary submissions.

District Judge Greg McCourt said that he was satisfied there was a prima facie case to answer.

Hughes was remanded in custody to appear before Newry Crown Court on December 17 for arraignment.
